Description:
Rehabilitate 6 springs in deer and elk summer range in the Pahvant Mountains
Location:
Five (5) spirngs are located in Inventoried Roadless Areas in the Corn Creek drainge east of Kanosh. The sixth is located on private land (Indian Ranch) above Holden.
Project Need
Need For Project:
Reliable source of water are limited to springs on summer elk and deer range in the Leavitt's Peak - Sunset Peak area of the Pahvant Mountains. Trough systems on 5 important springs no longer function and heavy cattle use of the spring itself has eliminated riparian vegetation and reduced water quality.
Objectives:
Replace spring boxs, pipes and troughs and locate trough outside the spring-riparian areas to provide cattle and big game a watersource away from sensitve areas. Fence riparian areas around springs on Leavitt's to further exclude cattle and facilitate recovery.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Failure to improve these areas will result in further damage to riparian vegetation, increased erosion and loss of habitat for various wildlife species.

Completion
Start Date:
07/01/2013
End Date:
06/30/2014
FY Implemented:
2014
Final Methods:
A UHP helicopter was used to transport materials to 6 springs, 5 on the Fishlake NF and 1 on private land.
Project Narrative:
Troughs, pipe and other materials were flown into remote locations on the Pahvant Mountains to provide water sources for wildlife. This project was actually paid for and organized by SFW Delta chapter. The USFS and UDWR provided assistance in preparing loads for transport and providing materials, but the WRI funded portion was all SFW. Although not included on this project, the USFS used some of the materials flown in to construct a rail fence around the production area of Leavitt's Spring and piped water to a trough outside the riparian area. This was completed in Summer of 2015.
Future Management:
USFS will monitor condition of the springs on National Forest ground. I assume UDWR will monitor the spring located on private ground (Indian Ranch).
