Description:
In June 2011 a fire started on The Nature Conservancy property and quickly spread along the riparian corridor of Mill Creek. This private project will drill seed 6 acres of upland riparian habitat along Mill Creek.
Location:
This project will be implemented on private property adjacent to southern portion of the Scott M Matheson Wetlands Preserve along Mill Creek in Moab, Utah.
Project Need
Need For Project:
In June 2011 a fire was started by several people who were playing with fireworks along Mill Creek. The fire rapidly spread downstream along the riparian corridor and adjacent upland habitat. The fire damaged land owned by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and a neighboring private landowner. The trees along Mill Creek were completely decimated as were the fields on the private land and the upland shrub community. The uplands and fields need to be seeded to ensure high value wildlife habitat along the corridor. The private land has a conservation easement on it, that is held by TNC, and the landowners manage the property for wildlife habitat.
Objectives:
1. Enhance wildlife habitat by reseeding the upland shrub community so that native shrubs, grasses and forbs become establish. 2. Enhance wildlife habitat by reseeding the fields on the private lands adjacent to the riparian corridor.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
By reseeding the uplands and fields, the risk of these lands being dominated by undesirable species, such as annual kochia and noxious weeds, is significantly decreased. This land is owned by The Nature Conservancy and is well managed and cared for. The private land is protected by a conservation easement held by TNC. Both of these landowners manage their land for wildlife habitat and the investment of reseeding these areas will be protected.
Relation To Management Plan:
The Scott M Matheson Habitat Management Plan identifies these upland areas as valuable wildlife habitat. The plan also allows habitat restoration work to occur if it is needed.

Future Management:
There is no grazing on either the private or adjacent TNC land. The land owner has installed a new well system so that the seeded area can be irrigated about once a month.
