Description:
Calder Reservoir suffers periodic fish summer/winter kill due to low water conditions from drought etc. It is proposed that a wind generated aeration system may prevent this process, and help increase fish survival.
Location:
Installation of 6 additional windmills (for a total of 9) on the bank of Calder Reservoir.
Project Need
Need For Project:
Calder Reservois is a Utah Blue Ribbon Fishery. The rainbow trout there are managed as a trophy fish, and as such are a valuable asset to anglers. Calder Reservoir suffers from periodic summer and winter kills from lack of oxygen, imbalance in algae and micoorganisms etc. This can be prevented with enough dissolved oxygen. Calders has a local economical impact. A 2011 Fish and Wildlife fishing and hunting survery estimated the average angler in Utah spends $38/trip. It was estimated that Calders saw 1577 angler trips, resulting is $59,926 over a 6 month period. Calders is stocked with 5,000 fingerlings at a cost of about $155. An estimate from Koenders recommended 10 windmills for Calders. A recent TU project funded thru private fundraising placed 3 Koender's windmills in November of 2015. TU - High Desert Anglers is pursuing funding for an additional 6 windmills, for a total of 9. As of January 10 2016, the 3 windmills were turning with a small area of open water, from aeration.
Objectives:
To prevent fish kill through increased oxygenation by wind generated aerators.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
It is recommended that we use up to 10 windmills. It is a possibility that 3 windmills may not be sufficient. Vandalism of the windmills is a real concern as well. The windmills also will need to have some maintenance performed on them periodically.

Wade, Habitat Council might be a better funding source than WRI for this project.
Comment 01/20/2016 Type: 1 Commenter: Natalie Boren
Wade you could also add Tiger Trout as a benefited species as we stock them in low numbers in Calder.

Completion
Start Date:
09/04/2017
End Date:
11/13/2017
FY Implemented:
2018
Final Methods:
Construction of a permanent cement footing for both windmills and the solar system, building the windmills and installation of the solar portion of the system. Windmill systems are Koenders water solutions Inc and one solar unit from Keeton Industries
Project Narrative:
Trout Unlimited spent $20k on 7 windmills and solar aeration system. The solar system was $7500. With funding provided by BRFAC and HC all work has been completed and TU continues to utilize funds from their account to maintain the systems.
Future Management:
High Desert Anglers will continue to maintain and monitor the systems on a yearly basis and provide funding for minor fixes as needed.
