Description:
Install 6 upland game guzzlers in the hills around Gunnison, Utah
Location:
Project located on SITLA administered lands around Gunnison, Utah in Sanpete county. T19S, R1E sections 2,5,11,18 and 23
Project Need
Need For Project:
Water sources are limited on the foothills around Gunnison. Providing addition water will allow for chukar partridge to utilize more quality habitat in this area. These guzzlers will also provide dependable water for a variety of other wildlife.
Objectives:
Install 6 upland game guzzlers with metal aprons Monitor wildlife use with motion sensing cameras
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Vandalism if guzzlers is a concern Providing water for undesirable species
Relation To Management Plan:
This project will provide water for a variety of upland game wildlife including chukar partridge, morning dove and cottontail rabbit. The project area is winter and transitional range for mule deer. This project will help address some of the goals and objectives in the Strategic Management Plan for chukar partridge including: GOAL A: Establish and maintain optimum Chukar Partridge populations in all suitable habitat in Utah. Objective 1. Increase Utah five-year base, or average, Chukar Partridge populations Objective 2. Improve Chukar Partridge habitat on 64,000 acres statewide by 2008. GOAL B: Increase Chukar Partridge hunting and viewing opportunity in Utah. Objective 1. Increase Chukar Partridge hunting opportunity Objective 2. Increase public awareness and viewing opportunity for Chukar Partridge The proposed projects will address the following goals and objectives of the Division of Wildlife Resources most recent strategic management plan: Resource Goal: expand wildlife populations by protecting and improving wildlife habitat. Objective 1: protect existing wildlife habitat and improve 500,000 acres of critical habitats and watersheds throughout the state. Constituency Goal: Achieve broad-based support for Division programs and budgets by demonstrating the value of wildlife to all citizens of Utah. Objective 2: improve communication with wildlife organizations, public officials, private landowners, and government agencies to obtain support for Division programs.
Fire / Fuels:
Not applicable
Water Quality/Quantity:
Project will provide perennial water to a variety of wildlife
Compliance:
All 6 proposed guzzlers will be placed on lands administered by SITLA. DWR archaeologist will clear the individual guzzler sites. An application for Range Improvement form will be submitted to SITLA for approval before July 1st of 2018.
Methods:
Guzzlers will be installed with DWR personnel, Dedicated Hunters and volunteers. A DWR backhoe will excavate holes for guzzler placement where possible. Holes will be dug by hand in areas that can't be accessed with equipment. Volunteers and DWR employees will install tanks and aprons. Fencing will be installed where domestic livestock graze. Cameras will be installed to monitor use.
Monitoring:
Motion sensing cameras will be installed on guzzlers to monitor wildlife use. Volunteers and DWR employees will monitor cameras and download images.
Partners:
Division of Wildlife Resources SITLA
Future Management:
DWR personnel and local volunteers will maintain guzzlers
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
Domestic livestock will not benefit from the project. Fencing will be installed around guzzlers to ensure only wildlife utilize the water.

Final Methods:
Installed 6 upland game guzzles in the hills north of the town of Gunnison. All guzzlers are the 500 gallon Rotoguzz design with 9 ft x 12 ft metal apron. Each guzzler is fenced with a combination of net wire and post & rail fence to prohibit domestic livestock from using the guzzler but allowing wildlife access.
Project Narrative:
Guzzler tanks were installed by the DWR during the fall of 2018. Aprons were installed by volunteers including Dedicated hunters, boy scouts and locals during the early spring of 2019. Tanks were about 3/4 full from the winter precipitation prior to apron installation.
Future Management:
These guzzlers are maintenance free but will be checked on occasion by local hunters and DWR personnel. Trail cameras my be placed on these guzzlers in the future to determine wildlife use.
