Description:
To construct a wildlife friendly fence to prevent trespass by cattle and recreation activities.
Location:
At the Kamas WMA east of Kamas
Project Need
Need For Project:
Currently there is no fence on this boundary and there is trespass from both sides from cattle, hunters and hikers, bikers and equestrian users.
Objectives:
To construct a wildlife friendly fence that will serve as a boundary between DWR and private property. The gates will be installed in heavy deer, elk and moose trails and left open during the winter to facilitate movement. Having the fence will prevent trespass from cattle, hunters and recreation users going from the WMA onto the ranch and the ranch onto the wma.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Not constructing the fence will result in continued and escalated trespass problems for the DWR and the ranch.
Relation To Management Plan:
Statewide Mule Deer Management Plan Habitat goals of maintaining and cooperating with private lands Unit 7 Kamas Deer Plan. Kamas WMA as priority for work Statewide Moose and Statewide elk Working with private lands and maintaining DWR WMAs
Fire / Fuels:
The fence line will provide a small fuel break and additional access to combat fires.
Water Quality/Quantity:
None
Compliance:
Will be completed in house
Methods:
DWR will purchase materials and deliver to site where the ranch will construct the fence to DWR specs to be wildlife friendly. Gates will be placed to facilitate winter movements of deer, elk and moose.
Monitoring:
Fence will be monitored for needed repairs by DWR staff, ranch staff and the WMA grazer.
Partners:
High Star Ranch
Future Management:
To maintain fence and open/close gates when needed by WMA grazer.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
Will prevent cattle from traveling off of WMA into developed area and causing problems for DWR,DWR grazer and the ranch.

This project is extremely important in protecting critical deer and elk winter ranges on the Kamas unit. Wildlife managers will be able to better utilize grazing to improve habitat conditions on the Wide Hollow WMA, while eliminating over-grazing by trespass cattle. This project has my full supprot.

FY Implemented:
2019
Final Methods:
This boundary fence project was completed by the DWR purchasing and delivering materials to the neighboring landowner who provided the labor for the fence construction. The landowner did the steel post and wire work themselves and hired a local welding company to make the drill pipe braces. The fence line was cleared by the DWR archaeologist and then the private landowner used their own bulldozer to push the line clearing it of mainly oak brush. The fence has been signed by the DWR with the leaving/enter WMA signs.
Project Narrative:
The longer and wetter than usual spring on 2019 delayed the construction of the fence by a couple of months due to snow still being on the ground but the landowner was still able to complete it before June 30. As with most fencing there were a few more braces required than what we predicted but everything else went as smoothly as possible. We are hopeful that the DWR signs will be enough to prevent trespass going both directions, if it is found that additional signage is needed after the fence has been up for a year or two the landowner will post additional no trespassing signs. The labor took longer than the landowner expected so I added to the inkind amount.
Future Management:
To continue working with this and other adjacent landowners in defining our property boundary's. To maintain this fence and the signs on it as well.
