Description:
Install a larger capacity big game guzzler on the western side of the Wah Wah Mountains. Water is a limited resource for wildlife in Wah Wah Mountain Range and the surrounding area; particularly for elk, mule deer and pronghorn populations on the Southwest Desert Unit.
Location:
The Bob Jones Wildlife Guzzler is located on the west side of the Wah Wah Mountains. The range is located in western Millard County, UT approximately 34 miles west and slightly north of Milford, UT. The area is part of the Southwest Desert Management Unit and is important for elk, mule deer, pronghorn and multiple other mammal and avian species.
Project Need
Need For Project:
There is a significant amount of elk use on the west side of the Wah Wah range. These elk rely heavily on water placed for livestock and agriculture.
Objectives:
Increase water availability to elk, deer, and pronghorn in the area thereby decreasing dependence on livestock and agriculture and thereby reducing that conflict.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Availability of water limits wildlife use in the area. Without placement the habitat would become less available for wildlife to utilize if other water sources currently used were eliminated.
Relation To Management Plan:
Water would increase summer range for mule deer and elk identified as a limiting factor in both the elk and mule deer herd unit management plans for the Southwest Desert.
Fire / Fuels:
Guzzler will be built to withstand fire events. No other benefits known.
Water Quality/Quantity:
This will provide consistent, reliable water for wildlife within the area.
Compliance:
1 Archaeologist, Survey will be completed in-house by DWR. Include $2,000 in-kind for cultural resource inventory., July 2018, Archeology clearance will be completed prior to project implementation. BLM NEPA completed and approved prior to implementation.
Methods:
UDWR would install 10,200 gallon big game guzzler by purchasing the materials and contracting with an excavator to come out and assist with the installation.
Monitoring:
Guzzler is in the UDWR inventory list and will be monitored at least every other year. District biologist may monitor for wildlife usage during annual deer and elk classification. Game Camera may also be placed to determine level of use.
Partners:
DWR, BLM, Sportsmans Groups
Future Management:
Grazing would not be impacted by this action. Guzzler would continue to be monitored and checked regularly.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
Guzzler will be fenced to exclude domestic livestock. This guzzler is for wildlife use only.

Dave, Same questions about designing to allow access by charismatic microfauna I had with your Mineral Mountain guzzler project. Keith

Keith, small mammals and birds should be able to benefit from this but it will not provide enough surface water for bats.

Completion
Start Date:
07/02/2018
End Date:
01/31/2019
FY Implemented:
2019
Final Methods:
UDWR contracted with a local excavation company to remove the old guzzler and install the new one. Guzzler consisted of metal catchment apron and 6 underground cistern tanks totaling 10,200 gallons of storage. UDWR worked alongside the excavation company and placed the metal frame along with cemented legs and then plumbed the tanks as the excavator set them and then ran a line out to a drinker and float box. Finally UDWR installed a lodgepole rail fence around the drinker to allow easy use for wildlife while excluding feral horses and livestock. A barbed wire fence was also placed around the apron to protect it from damage.
Project Narrative:
Multiple contracts were used to complete the work. RJ Fabrication provided the metal apron kit. Tank equipment inc. provided the cistern tanks. Construction and Mining Services provided the excavation and removal. Several local hardware and plumbing stores provided additional parts and pieces as needed. UDWR Full time staff and habitat seasonal crew provided the labor outside the excavation contract to complete the install. The majority of the install took place the week of Oct 15-19, 2018.
Future Management:
Now that guzzler has been replaced it is part of the guzzler maintenance database and will be visited at least once every other year to check condition and function and repaired and adjusted as needed.
