Description:
Install 9 guzzlers on the Cedar Mountains to benefit mule deer, chukars, and possibly bighorn sheep in the future.
Location:
The Cedar Mountains are located west of the Stansbury Mountain range just south of I-80. T4S, R11W Sec 36; T5S, R10W, Sec 2,16,36
Project Need
Need For Project:
The Cedar Mountains located in Tooele County are one of the driest mountain ranges in Utah. There are currently several upland game guzzlers located on the northern part of the Cedar Mountains to help provide needed water for upland game species. However, the design of these guzzlers does not allow access for larger wildlife to drink. To benefit big game species and other larger wildlife we are proposing to install a new design of guzzler that will allow for all wildlife to drink at several new locations where there are no current guzzlers. We also hope to replace old design guzzlers on BLM land in the future.
Objectives:
1. Increase the availability of water for all wildlife species on the Cedar Mountain Range. 2. Help improve survival of wildlife. 3. Increase wildlife populations and species diversity.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
This project will help improve the health and survival of wildlife in this region by providing necessary water. This will help protect investments that the UDWR and sportsman groups have made to increase wildlife populations on the Cedar Mountains.
Relation To Management Plan:
State Mule Deer Management Plan Utah Bighorn Sheep Management Plan B. Habitat Management Goal: Provide good quality habitat for healthy populations of bighorn sheep. f. Improve or maintain existing water sources and develop new water sources as needed to improve distribution and abundance of bighorn sheep. STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR CHUKAR PARTRIDGE
Fire / Fuels:
Not Applicable
Water Quality/Quantity:
This project will help increase water quantity available for wildlife.
Compliance:
We will conduct all cultural surveys in house with UDWR Archaeologists prior to guzzler construction. We have contacted SITLA and have approval to move forward and will have RIP signed before work begins.
Methods:
Guzzlers will be constructed with 500 gallon roto guzzler tanks. A 2'X9' hole will be dug and the tanks will be placed inside. Once the tnak is in place we will construct a 9 ft X 12 ft metal apron to collect the rain and snow moisture into the tank. The apron will be made of sheet metal and steal beams. This apron will be supported by 8 steal posts that will be pounded into the ground until firm. A rain gutter will be placed on the lip of the apron to catch the water runoff and direct it into the tank. We will construct 7 of these guzzlers.
Monitoring:
We will place motion sensor camera traps at each of the guzzlers to identify what wildlife is using them and how often.
Partners:
We will seek for funding from all sportsman groups and volunteer help to construct them. We have spoken with the Mule Deer Foundation already and they are supportive in funding this project.
Future Management:
We will see what wildlife use these guzzlers and decide on effectiveness and future need for more guzzlers. We will also monitor the condition of these guzzlers and make repairs as needed.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
This project will reduce the demand and use by wildlife on existing water sources for livestock and therefore increase the amount of water for livestock.

Project Comments
Comment 02/12/2019 Type: 1 Commenter: Janice Gardner
This project may benefit bat species that are listed as Wildlife Species of Concern (e.g., Fringed Myotis). Consider guzzler design to include "escape ramps" to avoid smaller wildlife species drowning.
Comment 02/12/2019 Type: 1 Commenter: Robert Edgel
The new design of guzzlers we use is open so bats would be able to access it and it has a built in escape ramp. Thanks I will add those species.

Final Methods:
We built 6 guzzlers at 4 locations. They are the rotoguzz 500 gallon style guzzlers. We built two in November of 2019 and built 4 more in June of 2020. We planned on originally building 9 guzzlers but SITLA was in the process of trading their lands to the BLM and the BLM only wanted 2 guzzlers built on the north end of the mountain range. They felt that there was plenty of water on the south end and that having guzzlers would not be consistent with their wilderness study area designation. We tried to work with them but in the end we decided to build 4 guzzlers on the south end at two locations on the one piece of SITLA land to get as much water down there as possible for wildlife.
Project Narrative:
The Cedar Mountains located in Tooele County are one of the driest mountain ranges in Utah. There are currently several upland game guzzlers located on the northern part of the Cedar Mountains to help provide needed water for upland game species. However, the design of these guzzlers does not allow access for larger wildlife to drink. To benefit big game species and other larger wildlife we installed a new design of guzzler that will allow for all wildlife to drink at several new locations where there are no current guzzlers. This is especially important in the Cedar Mountains because of drier climates and overuse from wild horses of natural springs. Wild horses have been shown to exclude wildlife from natural springs and the need to have guzzlers that wild horses cannot access is great.
Future Management:
We will place wildlife cameras on the guzzlers to see what wildlife are using them and to ensure that wild horses are not excluding wildlife from them. We will continue to monitor wildlife populations out there and water sources and work with the BLM to make sure that there is adequate water out there for wildlife and that wild horses are not excluding them from it.
