Description:
Reconstruct a non-functioning 125x125' rainwater catchment, and replacing the pipe going into the storage tank. Reconstructing and maintaining fence surrounding apron.
Location:
Approximately 36 miles south of the town of Escalante. Located on the 50 mile bench road.
Project Need
Need For Project:
The old metal tin apron has blown off due to the wood underneath rotting away that the tin was fastened too. Reconstruction will provide livestock and wildlife water in the Carcass pasture of the Soda allotment.
Objectives:
Install a 125 x 125 ft rainwater catchment apron. Replace a 50' portion of the pipeline from the catchment to the storage tank. Maintain and improve the fence that surrounds the apron.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Overall threats/risks are negligible. Work would be done within the original foot print of the current apron.
Relation To Management Plan:
Grandstaircase Escalante National Monument Management Plan
Fire / Fuels:
N/A
Water Quality/Quantity:
Water Quantity will be increased with the installation of a new apron. The catchment will provide a reliable water source to wildlife and livestock in the 50 mile bench area.
Compliance:
This is an existing apron catchment. The new apron will simply be placed on the old apron pad.
Methods:
Remove whats left of the old tin apron and any vegetation that has grown on the pad. Install new apron and the pipeline leading from the new apron to the storage tank. Any fence taken out would be reconstructed and maintenance would be done on the remaining fence.
Monitoring:
Personnel will continue to collect monitoring data (trend, utilization, etc...) throughout the area in accordance with the allotment management plan.
Partners:
BLM Soda allotment permittee
Future Management:
Livestock operators will be responsible for project upkeep and maintenance. Livestock grazing would continue in this part of the pasture. Currently the Soda allotment has 2,798 active AUM's (approximately 350 cattle). The season of use is from 10/01-5/31.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
The proposed action will improve grazing on the allotment. Providing more reliable water to locations generally not accessible due to distance from water will both improve distribution and forage availability. The area will continue to be managed according to the Allotment management plan using a rest rotation grazing system.
