Description:
The Green Ravine Fire burned 2117 acres just East of the town of Lake Point, UT. The fire was contained on 6 September 2019. The plan is to rehabilitate the fire scar by aerial broadcasting a prescribed seed mix, one-way chain harrowing those areas that are accessible, and secondary forage kochia seeding in January.
Location:
Directly east of the town of Lake Point, UT. Township, Range R4w and R3W, Sections: ,1, 5, 6, 30, 31, 32, 36
Project Need
Need For Project:
The Green Ravine Fire burned 2117 acres just East of the town of Lake Point, UT. The fire was contained on 6 September 2019. The fire severity was light to moderate but the threat of cheat grass and annual wildrye will increase future ignition sources that threaten infrastructure and private dwellings. Check dams are being constructed to mitigate runoff events that threaten structures located within the town of Lake Point.
Objectives:
Prevent annual weeds from establishing. Reduce future fire risk.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Doing nothing would allow annual weeds to create a risk of an ignition source for future fires. This site had some perennial grasses but has room for improvement which would also lower the risk of igniting a fire.
Relation To Management Plan:
This treatment is consistent with the West Desert Resource Management Plan (1987) and the 2010 West Desert District Normal Year Fire Rehabilitation Plan (DOI-BLM-UT-W000-2010-0001-EA).
Fire / Fuels:
This project will reduce the threat of future fires by suppressing annual weeds. (Cheatgrass and Annual wildrye).
Water Quality/Quantity:
This will help prevent erosion and improve water quality.
Compliance:
Cultural clearances, contracting paperwork, and other necessary preparations will begin as soon as funds are made available.
Methods:
Aerial broadcasting a prescribed seed mix over entire acreage. One-way chain harrow over accessible areas on the lower portion of the fire scar (approximately 190 acres). Aerial Broadcast secondary seeding of forage kochia.
Monitoring:
BLM will continue to monitor success of treatment and make any future treatments as needed.
Partners:
BLM and Rio Tinto are providing most of the funds for the project. UDWR will purchase the seed and mix it, contract the seed flight and then be reimbursed by BLM.
Future Management:
Prescribed grazing after two years for perennial plant establishment.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
This project will increase the quantity and quality of forage for wildlife and livestock.

What's the plan for the harrow portion? Will BLM complete it in-house? Also, what's the plan for cultural resources? Do we need funding for it or will BLM complete in-house?
Comment 10/01/2019 Type: 2 Commenter: Boyd White
Thanks for the comment Tyler, We will supply the Chain Harrow and the BLM will supply a tractor. The BLM said they would do the CRI on their portion and we will need to clear 52 acres in house. Thanks, Boyd

Please enter any missing expenses, highlighted in rust, on the Finance Page. The missing info is for the in-kind amount from the BLM. When you have completed that please go back to the Completion Form and finalize your report again so I know that it has been completed. Thanks.

Thanks for making those corrections. I have moved this project to completed.
Completion
Start Date:

End Date:
02/13/2020
FY Implemented:
2020
Final Methods:
Broadcast Seed Mix with fixed wing airplane 2,117 acres total. D8 Dozer rented by the BLM to pull a chain harrow to incorporate seed in the lower 138 acres of the project. Secondary shrub seed flight on all 2,117 acres.
Project Narrative:
On November 14, 2019 seed was delivered to the Tooele Valley Airport and two different seed mixes were broadcast by seeding with a fixed wing airplane contracted through Hammond Helicopter. One mix was for the lower elevation (190 acres) and the other was for the upper elevation where there would be no ground disturbance (1,927 acres). The terrain was too steep to mechanically incorporate any of this seed. The D-8 dozer was delivered to the site on 2 Dec 2019 and operated by the BLM on 138 acres of BLM property. The remaining 52 acres were not inventoried for cultural resources so they were not chain harrowed. On 13 February 2020 straight Kochia seed was aerial broadcast by a fixed wing plane at 2.1 lb/ac. on the full 2117 acres.
Future Management:
This area is within a BLM grazing allotment but is not currently utilized by livestock. The area will be allowed to establish the seeding and then perhaps the BLM will consider grazing.
