Location:
Private land adjacent to U.S. Forest and the Loafer mountain Wildlife Management Area in Utah county. T10S, R3E, sections 3, 15 and 33
Project Need
Need For Project:
Reliable water is important for all wildlife. This guzzler project will provide water for big game further west near public lands and keep animals from moving farther east to find water and cause problems with depredation on private lands near highway 89.
Objectives:
- Install 3 large big game guzzlers - Provide perennial water
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Not applicable
Relation To Management Plan:
The proposed project will address the following goals and objectives of the Division of Wildlife Resources most recent strategic management plan: Resource Goal: expand wildlife populations and conserve sensitive species by protecting and improving wildlife habitat. 1) protect existing wildlife habitat and improve 500,000 acres of critical habitats and watersheds throughout the state. This project will help achieve some of the objectives in the most recent mule deer plan for Management unit 16A Central Mountains: * Continue to improve, protect, and restore sagebrush steppe habitats critical to deer. Cooperate with federal land management agencies and private landowners in carrying out habitat improvements such as pinion juniper removal, reseedings, controlled burns, grazing management, water developments, etc. on public and private lands. Habitat improvement projects will occur on both winter ranges as well as summer range. * Manage riparian areas in critical fawning habitat to furnish water, cover and succulent forage from mid to late summer. This project will also help meet the following objectives of the Unit 16 elk plan: * Cooperate with livestock operators and federal agencies to improve range management practices in such a way to optimize both livestock and elk forage production and thus minimize conflicts.
Fire / Fuels:
Not applicable
Water Quality/Quantity:
This project will provide additional water for wildlife
Compliance:
The guzzler locations will need an archaeology clearance
Methods:
Purchase 3 large boss tank type guzzler tanks, apron materials and fencing. Use volunteers and regional personnel to install tanks,10 ft x 12 ft metal aprons, and post and rail fencing to exclude domestic livestock.
Monitoring:
Trail cameras will be placed on guzzlers to determine wildlife use.
Partners:
This project is being done in cooperation with the Crab creek CWMU. The CWMA is paying for one of the 3 guzzlers and will assist in the construction, maintenance and monitoring.
Future Management:
The property the guzzlers are on will be managed as a cooperative hunting unit
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
This project will help better distribute deer and elk in the area

Big game in this area, especially elk, have to cross large sections of private land to obtain water. Guzzler locations will keep elk on public ground and also keep them at a safe distance from highway and domestic elk facility.

Final Methods:
Installed three 1,800 gallon Boss tank guzzlers with 9 ft x 12 ft metal aprons on private land. Guzzlers are located on the east side of the Nebo Wildlife Management unit near the Forest Service boundary. These guzzlers will provide perennial water for big game animals and hopefully keep these animals from traveling farther east to Thistle creek. Each guzzler is fenced with post & rail fencing to prevent livestock from accessing the guzzlers.
Project Narrative:
Guzzlers were installed by Central Region Habitat personnel.
Future Management:
Guzzlers were placed on private land that is part of the Crab Creek CWMU. The land is managed for livestock grazing and to provide quality big game habitat in order to sell hunting permits.
