Project Need
Need For Project:
The Fish Lake ice fishing perch tournament has turned into a very popular winter activity that many people look forward to. February 22, 2020 will be the 4th year of the tournament. In 2019, about 3,000 people registered for the one day event and an estimated 2,000 people actually attended. An estimated 30,000- 40,000 perch were harvested that day and many prizes were given out. A lot of positive public feed back and publicity comes from the event. In the past the tournament has been funded by the Southern Region Aquatics budget and Salt Lake office Aquatics budget. The annual budget to hold the event is approximately $5,000.00, not including all of the in-kind and donation expenses that happen. Regional and Salt Lake office annual budgets are always tight and we need another source of money to fund this event annually. This is a cooperative event that brings other agencies, organizations, local government and businesses, and private individuals together to hold a successful tournament. Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife proves a lot of help, labor and funding to get donations from many private businesses for prizes for the event.
Objectives:
Secure funding that will cover expenses for the annual Fish Lake perch tournament.

Methods:
The most important issue in holding the perch tournament is to plow snow to provide enough parking areas for all of the vehicles. UDOT plows the highway and several parking areas along the highway, including Joe's Bush parking area. Fish Lake Resorts private business plows the Lakeside Marina parking lot and helps keep other parking areas open along the highway. The last few years Fishlake National Forest has provided a skid steer and operator to move snow and open up the Doctor Creek group parking area and the road down to the lake and parking area, as well as, the Twin Creeks parking area. In 2019, the DWR Salt Lake office paid the DWR heavy equipment crew to rent a front-end loader to plow snow and open up much needed extra parking at the north end of the lake. In 2020 it is even more critical that we provide extra parking at the north end of the lake and to plow the new large parking lot at Bowery Haven Marina. Funds would be used for DWR to rent a front-end loader for snow removal. Funds would also be used to rent 20 portable toilets that are placed at parking areas around the lake. We also need to purchase 5 gallon buckets to organize prizes in to give out to those catching tagged perch, other contest winners and raffle.
Monitoring:
Always assessing the event afterwards to look for ways to improve it.
Partners:
UDOT, Fishlake National Forest, Fish Lake Resorts
Future Management:
We plan to continue to hold the perch tournament annually.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
The tournament has no impact on the fishery or local resources. Removing perch helps other fish species in Fish Lake.

End Date:
06/30/2021
FY Implemented:
2021
Final Methods:
The Fish Lake perch tournament was cancelled in FY21 because of Covid. No snow plowing or rental of port-a-potties was needed. The Fishlake National Forest has plowed snow in the past for the perch tournament. It was decided to use the funds to help the Forest Service purchase a new snow plow blade for future snow plowing. However, the FS purchased a new snow plow before we sent them the money and due to rules we could not send any funds to them. All of the money was returned to BRF account.
Project Narrative:
No money was spent on the Fish Lake perch tournament
Future Management:
Will seek funding in the future if the perch tournament is held.
