Location:
Pine Springs Canyon area on BLM managed lands
Project Need
Need For Project:
Treatment will increase resiliency of the Ponderosa stand. It will also lessen impact of wildfire.
Objectives:
Thin conifers to pre-fire suppression condition, reduce trees/acre and crown spacing to improve individual tree vigor. Reduce crown fire risk.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Loss of ponderosa stand due to extreme fire behavior. Elevated risk of insect mortality.
Relation To Management Plan:
Project conforms to current NEPA and the Vernal Field Office RMP.
Fire / Fuels:
Reduce fuel load and ladder fuels. Reduce risk of crown fire.
Water Quality/Quantity:
Reduction of conifers should increase available water within the stand and may increase ephemeral water flow.
Compliance:
Project will comply with the GRD-VFO NEPA and RMP.
Methods:
Thin ponderosa stand. Hand fell and pile pinyon juniper and excess ponderosa saplings.
Monitoring:
Repeat photography and plots to determine trees per acre and species composition.
Partners:
UDWR, BLM Fuels, BLM Forestry.
Future Management:
Maintain healthy ponderosa pine stand
