Lead: Utah Division of Wildlife Resources
WRI Region: Statewide
Description:
Create a program within each region to purchase materials for the maintenance of guzzlers for wild sheep.
Location:
Statewide
Project Need
Need For Project:
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources installs and maintains guzzlers (man-made water developments) to allow wildlife to utilize habitat that might not otherwise be occupied or functional without additional water. Guzzlers are built to primarily benefit upland and/or big game, but can also benefit other wildlife species and livestock in some cases. In arid Utah, guzzlers can be critical to wildlife especially in years of drought.
Objectives:
Supply materials to Utah Wild Sheep Foundation volunteers to maintain guzzlers for bighorn sheep.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Failure to maintain water developments may be detrimental to bighorn sheep populations.
Relation To Management Plan:
The Statewide Bighorn Sheep management plan calls to maintain water distribution facilities effectively expanding wildlife distribution to areas where water is the limiting factor for wildlife.
Fire / Fuels:
N/A
Water Quality/Quantity:
Guzzler construction and maintenance provides critical water sources for wildlife throughout the State.
Compliance:
Archaeology, UDWR archaeologist will be contacted prior to undertaking any projects that may or are likely to require clearance. Survey required for project activities having the potential to impact the ground. This project will focus on maintaining existing guzzlers so archeology will usually not be necessary.
Methods:
Volunteers and regional maintenance personnel will assess guzzler maintenance needs of guzzlers and determine a course of action. The fund from this project will provide materials to guzzlers in need of repair.
Monitoring:
Volunteers and regional maintenance personnel will asses the needs of guzzler maintenance and DWR will enter these needs into the guzzler maintenance database.
Partners:
Utah Wild Sheep Foundation
Future Management:
Continue to improve water distribution for wildlife and livestock.

Final Methods:
Wild sheep foundation volunteers monitored and repaired 7 guzzlers on the north end of the Stansbury mountains. Wild sheep volunteers and DWR personnel hauled water to dry guzzlers in July of 2021. On June 23rd 2022 Wild sheep volunteers and DWR personnel build new 15' x 16' metal aprons on the Lower Broons canyon guzzler and adjacent Boss tank guzzler. Rebuilt the fence around the Boss tank and replaced a section of barbed wire fence with post & rail fence. On June 21st, built new 15' x 16' metal aprons on the Middle and Upper Broons canyon saucer guzzlers. Also replaced a section of barbed wire with post and rail fence at both locations.
Project Narrative:
Middle and Upper Broons canyon guzzlers were installed by the Forest Service in 2010 after the 2009 Big Pole fire burned the entire area. These saucer guzzlers are only about 300 gallon guzzler tanks that are typically dry by the end of June on most years due to the fact that the growing elk population is utilizing these guzzlers. Installing larger metal aprons will hopefully collect more water for these guzzlers and additional larger guzzler tanks are planned to be placed next to these saucer guzzler tanks during the fall of 2022.
Future Management:
The DWR manages the BLM guzzlers in the area and monitors the USFS saucer guzzlers.
