Description:
Bighorn populations on the Book Cliffs near and around.......... are assumed clean from Micro plasm. Micro plasm has the ability to completely extirpate populations. This micro plasm can be transmitted through domestic sheep populations. One of the multiple strategies to keep sheep clean includes pursuing ways to keep domestic sheep away from wild sheep. In an effort to do so the DWR and conservation partners have decided to supply livestock producers with feed in replacement of land grazing.

Need For Project:
Bighorn populations on the Book Cliffs near and around.......... are assumed clean from Micro plasm. Micro plasm has the ability to completely extirpate populations. This micro plasm can be transmitted through domestic sheep populations. In an effort to mitigate risk disease risk the UDWR explores all options to keep wild sheep away from disease risks. One of the multiple strategies to keep sheep clean includes pursuing ways to keep domestic sheep away from wild sheep. In an effort to do so the DWR and conservation partners have decided to supply livestock producers with feed in replacement of land grazing. This land grazing takes place in the middle of wild sheep populations and would have a very high likelihood that wild sheep could have a disease event.
Objectives:
Preserve and protect Utah's wild sheep populations
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Relation To Management Plan:
In the bighorn statewide management plan the division is directed to pursue ways to work with livestock producers for the betterment of both domestic and wild sheep populations.
