WRI Region: Southern
Description:
Sagegrouse in the Panguitch PHMA , have hit a "hard trigger" as defined in the 2015 ARPA land use plan Amendment for the Bureau of Land Management, and USFS in Southern Utah. 5 or more years population declines despite many beneficial habitat treatment, have led to the theory that male lek attendance may be shifting to alternate lek sites. Climatic conditions in the past 5 years have made counting difficult . This project would aid in discovery of leks.
Location:
Panguitch PHMA, Southern Utah, Kane, Iron, and Garfield Counties.
Project Need
Need For Project:
The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is a species of concern in areas of sagebrush habitat in the western United States and a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sensitive species in the state of Utah. The Greater Sage-grouse Conservation Objectives Final Report (COT report) (USFWS 2013) states that "Functional habitat loss also contributes to habitat fragmentation, as greater sage-grouse avoid areas due to human activities, including noise, even though sagebrush remains intact". With time and habitat treatment in place Sagegrouse numbers on the PHMA have continued to decline this study hopes to determine if the decline is due to male lek attendance shifting due to treatments or other factors.
Objectives:
The scope of this project is the discovery and infrared mapping and monitoring of sagegrouse populations in the Panguitch PHMA for up to 3 or more years. This data would provide information for site specific lek attendance to determine population numbers in the PHMA, within the habitat treatments, and the need for a continued information for Hard Trigger determination
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
By determining the potential for additional satellite leks in the area, our goal would be to reducing the designation of a Hard Trigger over time for the PHMA and aid in the Casual Factor Analysis.
Relation To Management Plan:
Kanab Field Office RMP 2008 Utah Greater Sage-Grouse Approved Resource Management Plan Amendment (ARMPA; BLM 2015)
Fire / Fuels:
N/a
Water Quality/Quantity:
n/a
Compliance:
No NEPA or archeological clearances are required for this type of monitoring. Monitoring would be aerial in nature.
Methods:
Annually partners would meet to determine priority flight lines prior to lekking season
Monitoring:
Infrared would be partnered with on the ground site verification where applicable
Partners:
Utah Department of Wildlife Resources Bureau of Land Management CoCCARM
Future Management:
This project could continue into the future ,if the Casual Factor analysis determined additional need.
