Project Need
Need For Project:
regenerate spruce beetle-killed stands reduce wildfire in overstocked stands control the spread of invasive weeds 1. Cone (seed) collection, growing, and planting Engelmann spruce trees. The area was hit by the Engelmann spruce beetle in the early 1990's. The spruce beetle killed 80 to 90% of the mature trees. Therefore, there were not enough seed bearing trees left to repopulate the area. 100 acres X 300 seedlings/acre X ($2.00/seedlings + $3.00/seedling to plant) = $150,000.00 (There is a lot more acres that could be planted in this area of Electric Lake.) 2.With 100 years of wildfire suppression, the number of conifer trees per acre are increasing. With this increase, there is an increase in fire risk of unnatural fires, stagnation of tree growth, and decline in forest health such as diseases and insect outbreaks. 350 acres X $1,500/acre = $525,000.00 3.The Skyline Cooperative Weed Management Area (CWMA) is a partnership of county, state and federal agencies that work together to control the spread of weeds in Carbon, Emery and Sanpete counties. This Project priority for invasive weed control is to treat toadflax, Canada thistle, and whitetop, and isolated populations of musk thistle first before going after the musk thistle at large. The toadflax, Canada thistle, to a certain extend whitetop infestations are limited and can probably be easily controlled. Musk thistle in this area is like a raging fire moving very quickly across the landscape, destroying range and important wildlife habitat. Successful treatment will require the cooperation of numerous private landowners in this area, as well as the members of the CWMA and Sanpete County. First a thorough survey of the area, to determine where the invasive weeds are located, what the terrain is like, and who owns the property. Then take the necessary action to address issues of accessibility and agreements with private property owners. $100,000/$20.00/acre=5,000 acres to spray Total request: $150,000.00 + $525,000.00 + $100,000 = $775,000
Objectives:
Plant Engelmann spruce seedlings Control invasive species (musk/Canada thistles, yellow/Dalmatian toadflax, and whitetop) Thin overstocked stands Regenerate aspen stands Map the locations of isolated or new population of invasive weeds 3.To reduce and control the spread of noxious weeds, focusing on yellow/Dalmatian toadflax, Canada and musk thistle, and whitetop in the Electric Lake area. Map or remap the location of invasive weeds. Have records of their locations and the location of were they were eliminate to check that they are gone.
