WRI Region: Central
Description:
Seed a 22 acre fire scar and treat surrounding property boundary with a pre-emigrant to control annual rye grass.
Location:
The project is located on the Pine Canyon WMA on the northeast side of Tooele.
Project Need
Need For Project:
A 22 acre wildfire was started on adjacent private land to a portion of the Pine Canyon WMA. The fire was fueled by annual rye grass that has invaded on to the property. This portion of the Pine canyon property is bordered on 2 sides by residential housing. In order to prevent future fires, the fire scar will be seeded with fire wise plant species and the unburned property to the west will be sprayed with a pre-emergent to prevent annual rye grass from growing.
Objectives:
* Seed fire wise species into the fire scar * Achieve a cover value of seeded species to 15% aerial cover by the end of the 3rd growing season. * Reduce aerial cover of annual rye grass to less than 5% by the spring of 2024.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Lack of treatment may result in domination of the site by annual rye grass.
Relation To Management Plan:
This area supports mule deer (S4). The proposed project will address some of the habitat goals outlined in the deer and elk management plans: 1. UTAH DIVISION OF WILDLIFE RESOURCES STATEWIDE MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR MULE DEER Habitat Goal: Conserve and improve mule deer habitat throughout the state with emphasis on critical mule deer ranges. Habitat Objective 1. Maintain mule deer habitat throughout the state by protecting existing critical habitats and mitigating for losses due to human impacts. 2. Utah Elk Statewide Management Plan: Habitat Management Goal: Conserve and improve elk habitat throughout the state. Habitat Objective 1. Maintain elk habitat throughout the state by identifying and protecting existing crucial elk habitat and mitigating for losses due to human impacts. Strategies: Initiate broad scale vegetative treatment projects to improve elk habitat with emphasis on calving habitat and winter ranges. 3. The proposed project will address some of the habitat management strategies outlined in the deer management plan for herd unit 18 Oquirrh - Stansbury including: continue to restore and improve sagebrush steppe habitats critical to deer according to DWR's Habitat Initiative; cooperate with federal land management agencies and private landowners in carrying out habitat improvements such as reseedings, controlled burns, water developments etc. on public and private lands; and maintain and/or enhance forage production through direct range improvements throughout the unit to achieve population management objectives. 4. The proposed project will address the following goals and objectives of the Division of Wildlife Resources most recent strategic management plan: Resource Goal: expand wildlife populations and conserve sensitive species by protecting and improving wildlife habitat. Objective 1: protect existing wildlife habitat and improve 500,000 acres of critical habitats and watersheds throughout the state. Objective 2: Increase fish and game populations to meet management plan objectives and expand quality fishing and hunting opportunities.
Fire / Fuels:
This project will reduce annual rye and cheatgrass which will reduce the risk of future wildfires.
Water Quality/Quantity:
N/A
Compliance:
The Pine canyon WMA is a mine reclamation site and has been previously disturbed.
Methods:
The fire scar will be drill seeded with fire wise species that will not provide fuel for future wildfires. The boundaries of the WMA in this area that were not burned will be treated with Indaziflam (Esplanade) herbicide to prevent annual grasses from establishing on
Monitoring:
Photo points will be established to document treatment results.
Partners:
N/A
Future Management:
This property will continue to be managed as wildlife habitat as part of the Pine Canyon WMA.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
This property will continue to provide habitat and forage for big game and other wildlife species.

I have entered the expenses in the Through WRI/DWR column on the finance page. Please do not make any changes to numbers in the Through WRI/DWR column. Any "Through Other" or "In-kind" expenses will need to be entered by the PM or contributors. Be sure to click on the finalize button on the completion report when you have your completion report ready to be reviewed by WRI Admin. Don't forget to upload any pictures of the project you have of before, during and after completion. Thanks.

Final Methods:
The Pine Canyon WMA fire was started by fireworks in early July of 2022. It burned approximately 22 acres. Habitat personnel drill seeded the 22.5 acre Pine Canyon WMA burn area on October 25th and 26th of 2022 using the baby drill pulled behind a truck. Seeded at about 12 lbs to the acre with a mix of perennial grasses and forbs. Sprayed a preemergent herbicide Esplanade along the road and fence on the west side of the fire scar to control annual rye on April 10th of 2023. The area sprayed was about 17 acres.
Project Narrative:
In order to protect the nearby subdivision, a 30 ft wide green strip was planted along the south property boundary in 2013. This strip was sprayed with Esplanade, a preemergent, in the spring of 2021 to control annual rye grass which has increased in the area over the past several years. The preemergent treatment controlled annual rye and helped stop the wildfire which burned into it. See photos in the Images/Documents section.
Future Management:
This property is owned by Atlantic Richfield, a mining company currently owned by British Petroleum (BP). The DWR has a conservation easement on the property to manage for wildlife habitat. The property is a large open space on the east side of the town of Tooele. It winters a lot of deer and elk and receives a considerable amount of public use.
