Description:
Aquatics staff in the northeastern region have invested heavily in capital infrastructure over the past 6 years. This project is dedicated to a year round, part time aquatics specific maintenance technician who oversees our investments. Specific infrastructures includes: Red Fleet Fish Screen, Pelican Lake Fish Screen, Starvation Fish Screen, Big Sandwash Reservoir boat dock, Little Montes Fishing Pier, Calder Reservoir Aeration Systems and the Pelican Lake sediment catch basin.
Location:
Northeastern Region
Project Need
Need For Project:
Continued operation and maintenance of NER facilities is a ongoing chore. With previous years funds we have been able to complete backlogged maintenance projects and move forward on others. This project is important for routine weekly maintenance obligations of three new fish screens in the NER. The project fills the gap between WMA management funds and regional sportfish funds. It allows us to maintain our infrastructure and keep our facilities safe for the public.
Objectives:
Continue to effectively and efficiently maintain aquatics infrastructure in the Northeastern region. 1) Continue to maintain several newly constructed fish screens (Pelican Lake and Red Fleet Reservoir). Weekly maintenance is required to function properly. We also inspect routinely and monitor for the upmost longevity and safety of both structures. We also maintain the temporary fish screen below Starvation Reservoir which operates when spilling each spring. This screen requires 2X cleaning per week. 2) Continue to move and maintain the Big Sandwash Reservoir angler access dock. for 7-9 months of the year. BSW has no other entity to maintain the amenities as this is not a state park. Annual maintenance includes this dock and the rest room facility. 3)Maintain regional fishing piers, Duchesne river access signage and easements and other regional angler access points.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Threats and risks exist for public safety and continued angler access in our region if this funding is lost and we are not longer to maintain the many facilities and amenities we manage annually.
Relation To Management Plan:
Red Fleet Fisheries management plan- fish screen O&M, angler access improvements. Pelican Lake Fisheries management plan- sportsmans access, fish screen O&M. Starvation Fisheries management plan- fish screen O&M. Big Sandwash Management Plan- Angler Access improvements.

Water Quality/Quantity:
This technician routinely works on the Pelican Lake sediment catch basin which is directly related to water quality improvements and sediment control at Pelican Lake.

Methods:
Supervise and train a competent employee who safely oversees the regions non-WMA related aquatic infrastructure.
Monitoring:
UDWR biologist will continue to supervise the current Tech II maintenance technician. He is now fully trained and understands each facility, knows how everything works and is capable of both routine maintenance and fixing issues that come up. We work together with the habitat section on the aquatic specific WMA's maintenance on all our regional WMA's that are specifically managed by our aquatics staff.
Partners:
Multiple partners assist with operations throughout the region and include: BOR, CUWCD, State Parks, OPIC and much work happens within our own agency between Aquatics and Habitat sections.
Future Management:
We would like to continue this PT year round funding for long term maintenance of all these important aquatic infrastructures. They are not going away and we want to keep them running as effectively as possible into the future. This funding in conjunction with the WMA maintenance funds will provide the year round funding needed to keep our aquatics structures safe and functional for our users.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
Other sustainable uses of natural resources- This project becomes extremely important to sustainability of our investments of on the ground assets used by our anglers. Outdoor recreation in the NER is a component of life here and the DWR can provide safe and notable amenities for the constituents in our state.

Completion
Start Date:
07/03/2023
End Date:
06/30/2024
FY Implemented:
2024
Final Methods:
Hire, train and supervise a wildlife technician to complete required maintenance on regional aquatics infrastructure not associated with WMA's in the NER. Significate time cleaning and maintaining fish screen structures, moving and maintaining the BSW boat dock, repairing signs and cleaning/clearing angler access points. This technician works part time year round and this year over winter he completed fabrication of new anchors for a fishing pier in the NER.
Project Narrative:
Hire train and supervise a year round part time wildlife technician to maintain and complete needed repairs on aquatics infrastructure. We now have enough critical infrastructure in the NER that preventative maintenance is critical to keeping cost down and fixing issues as they arise.
Future Management:
Each year we will determine anticipated Aquatics O&M projects and associated costs. We will submit a proposal through HC to help keep a wildlife tech on year round part time to continue this important project.
