Project Need
Need For Project:
Fences in the Little Creek WMA are critical to protecting the 50,000 acre SITLA/UDWR block of land from livestock trespass. Over time, the fences deteriorate and need maintenance. The remote location of these fences requires stockpiling materials at each fence location with a helicopter. These materials can be used over the next 5-10 years as maintenance needs arise.
Objectives:
Objectives are to stockpile fencing posts, poles, and hardware at three locations for use during summer 2023 and beyond.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Threats from trespass livestock include overgrazing, streambank erosion, and a hazard for recreationalists.
Relation To Management Plan:
Little Creek Ridge WMA Habitat Management Plan
Objective 3: Eliminate livestock trespass
Fire / Fuels:
N/A
Water Quality/Quantity:
Controlling livestock trespass will reduce erosion and sediment transport in Willow Creek.
Compliance:
Project is solely on UDWR lands, repairing existing fence lines. No NEPA or Arch clearance required.
Methods:
A contracted helicopter will deliver materials to fencing locations. UDWR personnel will receive materials on the ground and stockpile materials under adjacent ledges for protection from weathering. Any immediate maintenance needs will be addressed at that time.
Monitoring:
UDWR, SITLA, and the public that use the area regularly encounter these fences and report maintenance needs.
Partners:
SITLA, public
Future Management:
Fences will be monitored for functionality and regular maintenance will be performed by UDWR.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
Livestock fences help control the use of the appropriate use of AUMs in the Willow Creek Drainage that are allocated for both livestock and wildlife.
