Lead: Utah Division of Wildlife Resources
WRI Region: Northeastern
Description:
Install 3,700 feet of WMA boundary fence
Location:
Currant Creek WMA is located about 7 miles northwest of Fruitland, Utah in Wasatch County, Utah.
Project Need
Need For Project:
The existing t post and wire fence is in a state of disrepair, most of it is on the ground, presenting a wildlife entanglement hazard. A new pipe fence would firmly establish UDWR boundary, prohibit illegal off road use of the area, and eliminate a hazard to wildlife.
Objectives:
Objective is to build a welded, drill pipe fence with a top rail height of 42" and a second rail height of 24".
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Threat of a property line dispute if a boundary is not firmly established. Threat of habitat damage to fields from illegal off road use. Threat of poaching with unrestricted access to area.
Relation To Management Plan:
Currant Creek Wildlife Management Area Habitat Management Plan Objective C. Construct fences where needed and maintain fences in good repair.
Fire / Fuels:
N/A
Water Quality/Quantity:
N/A
Compliance:
Fence is on UDWR boundary line along the exact fence line to be removed. No NEPA or Arch required.
Methods:
2 3/8" diameter drill pipe will be used to construct a fence with posts spaced 12 feet apart, a top rail at 42" height and a middle rail at 24" height.
Monitoring:
UDWR staff will regularly monitor the fence for maintenance needs.
Partners:
Buckhorn Ranch crop shares the fields
Future Management:
Monitoring will identify if any changes, maintenance, or alterations need to be made into the future.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
Protection of the habitat area from illegal off-road use will help maximize forage production in the area, and will minimize erosion caused by motorized vehicles.

Completion
Start Date:
06/03/2024
End Date:
06/28/2024
FY Implemented:
2024
Final Methods:
A private contractor was hired during the summer of 2024 to remove the 3,700' section of old fencing and replace it with a welded pipe fence design.
Project Narrative:
The Currant Creek WMA contains irrigated pastures next to a paved roadway. Over the past decade, the existing t-post and wire fencing has become damaged/cut numerous times and no longer serves a purpose of keeping vehicles out and has become a hazard for wildlife entanglement. This illegal access has created resource problems that involve erosion, weeds, dust, and poaching. This well-fortified fence will help clearly define the WMA boundary and eliminate the trespass and illegal access issue while facilitating safe wildlife passage.
Future Management:
Future maintenance needs will be performed by UDWR NER Habitat staff and Dedicated Hunters.
