Mineral Mountains, Oak Creek, Zion, Kaiparowits East and West, Stansbury, Gray Canyon, Jack Creek, Book Cliffs, Antelope Island

Need For Project:
This budget will cover the costs to capture and collar bighorn sheep on multiple units for disease monitoring, movement, and survival data collection.
Objectives:
Capture and collar bighorn sheep for continual monitoring of multiple populations.

Relation To Management Plan:
The bighorn sheep management plans calls for UDWR to use GPS collars to better understand survival, distribution, and movements of each herd and to use this information to refine estimates of population size.

Methods:
Bighorn sheep will be captured using helicopter net gunning, drop net, or chemical immobilization (depending on the location). Sheep will be disease tested and GPS collared.
Monitoring:
Bighorn sheep will be monitored using satellite GPS collars.
Partners:
This project is a partnership with DWR and conservation organizations.
Future Management:
Sheep will be monitored using GPS collars and surveys to determine if the transplants were successful.

Final Methods:
During FY24, we completed the below bighorn sheep captures: San Juan: 15 Zion:29 Oak Creek: 19 Mineral Mtns:20 Escalante: 30 Antelope Island: 12 Stansbury: 10 Nine Mile/Book Cliffs: 45 American Fork: 10 Nebo: 6 Nursery Facility: 33 (13 Skyrider, 20 NV) Total: 229
Project Narrative:
Bighorn sheep were captured across the state for disease testing, monitoring movements, estimating survival, and determining cause-specific mortality.
Future Management:
Animals survival and movements will be monitored using GPS collars.
