Description:
Equipment bridge at Farmington Bay WMA has sunk 8" on the south side. This project will raise and reinforce the foundation against sinking and erosion from the canal.
Location:
The project location is at Farmington Bay
Project Need
Need For Project:
Farmington Bay WMA bridge foundation has settled around 8 inches due to water erosion, and the deck is not wide enough for the track hoe to travel across without using mats, both of which create a safety risk to life and property.
Objectives:
Lift the bridge foundation, reinforce with helical piers, riprap, and increase width of the deck. These repairs will return the bridge to original elevation, reinforce against future sinking, prevent water erosion from undercutting the foundation and the extended width of the deck to allow for safe travel across with a trackhoe for WMA maintenance.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
There are threats and risks associated with those bridges every time someone uses one to cross a channel on the current bridges. The project is completely engineered and bid, ready for award with construction to be completed before hunting season in 2025.
Relation To Management Plan:
The relation to the Farmington Bay WMA habitat management plan is to maintain infrastructure.
Fire / Fuels:
N/A
Water Quality/Quantity:
The water quality may improve because there will be anymore erosion occurring at Farmington Bay around the bridge.
Compliance:
All archeological compliances will be followed as needed. DFCM is also involved, therefore the project will follow applicable codes and their rules.
Methods:
Farmington Bay will install helical piers to lift and stabilize the foundation, fill under the foundation and riprap to prevent further decay. Finally the deck can be modified by removing concrete curbs and installing steel curbs on the edges to add approximately 16" of additional width to the bridge for the heavy equipment and track hoe traffic.
Monitoring:
The bridges will be walked and safety will be noted into the future. Close attention will be paid to the bridge abutment conditions as well.

Future Management:
Future management will consist of managing Farmington Bay WMA for wildlife, but with the safety of our users in mind.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
By installing and repairing this bridges, safety measures are being taken for our users. Also, future erosion is being prevented and water quality will improve.
