Description:
We seek funding for equipment to improve sampling efficiency and standardization in streams across central Utah.
Location:
Equipment will be used across the central region zone on smaller rivers and streams.
Project Need
Need For Project:
Newly developed technology with electrofishing equipment helps biologist be more efficient and consistent with their sampling protocols. Standardization is becoming desired across the state, and improving the equipment available to biologists allows them to keep better track of sampling locations, gear, and, specifically, consistency between settings used at each site. I am seeking funding to upgrade old equipment that has been used heavily over the last 20+ years.
Objectives:
1) Obtain equipment that assists in standardizing sampling protocols across the region. 2) Improve sampling efficiency on rivers and streams of Blue Ribbon, potential Blue Ribbon, and non-Blue Ribbon waters in the region. 3) Assess population dynamics for sportfish and native species, including but not limited to; Bonneville Cutthroat Trout, Brown Trout, Sculpin and various sucker species.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
In the short term, this equipment would be used in the Provo River sampling, expected to occur in FY2025. Over the long term, this equipment will be used on all streams across the Central Region to sample rivers and streams.

Compliance:
Not applicable - all sampling using this equipment falls under the jurisdiction of the Utah Division of Wildlife
Methods:
The Central Region Sportfish Department will purchase electrofishing equipment. The equipment will be used year-round, primarily in the late summer when standard stream surveys occur daily. Additionally, this equipment may be used to sample the sportfish populations in the newly created Provo River Delta while assisting with June Sucker recovery sampling.
Monitoring:
The project's success will be measured indirectly through sampling across multiple years. Given that this is an equipment purchase to improve the available equipment to the biologist, no metric exists to determine if we are directly improving the fishery. However, standardizing sampling across our region will help improve the knowledge of our fisheries over multiple years when we can look into what settings, locations, and techniques are most effective at sampling fish.
