Project Need
Need For Project:
The GBRC Restoration Equipment Crew maintains and delivers equipment crucial to the success of WRI projects throughout the state of Utah. A primary tool to accomplish this task is a specialized boom truck capable of loading and transporting nonstandard equipment such as Ely-chains and other tools. The current boom truck was purchased in 2007 and currently has approximately ~315,000 miles and 9,800 hours (average 18,500 miles/year). While this is not excessive mileage for a truck of this type, the terrain and use that is demanded of the truck and boom system have put additional wear and tear on them. Over the last year there has been a noted increase in the service and maintenance needs and costs for the truck and boom, and it is anticipated these problems will only increase with continued service in the trucks current capacity. Due to the crucial role of the equipment to the operations of the WRI it is deemed necessary to update the existing truck and boom system to ensure a reliable and consistent service for projects moving forward.
Objectives:
Replace the aging truck, hydraulic boom system, and dump bed of the GBRC Restoration Equipment Crew and maintain reliable service to WRI projects throughout the state.
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
Statewide. The truck will be housed at the GBRC in Ephraim, UT, but will service WRI projects throughout the state.
Relation To Management Plan:
Provide equipment to projects as outlined in various management plans.
Fire / Fuels:
Outlined in the various WRI projects equipment is provided too.
Water Quality/Quantity:
Outlined in the various WRI projects equipment is provided too.
Compliance:
Outlined in the various WRI projects equipment is provided too.
Methods:
Purchase of the truck will be separate from the hydraulic boom and bed systems. Due to the special nature of the work, both the truck and boom/bed systems will be custom designed. The GBRC Restoration Equipment Crew will work with vendors to design and build equipment that will fulfill the needs of the varied restoration projects through the WRI. The truck will be ordered first, then upon delivery of the truck the boom/bed system will be ordered. It is anticipated that from date of ordering to delivery of the truck will be 4-5 months. Building and configuration of the boom/bed system will be 3-4 months.
Monitoring:
Mileage and maintenance logs will be kept.
Partners:
This equipment is used to benefit all partners in the WRI.
Future Management:
This equipment will have a rigorous maintenance regime to ensure it's ability to provide consistent service throughout it's lifespan. It is anticipated the new truck and hydraulic boom/bed system will have a similar lifespan to the existing system of 15-20 years.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
This truck is crucial to the operations of the WRI and GBRC. Other sustainable uses are outlined in the various WRI projects equipment is provided too.
