Description:
Fly in apron materials to replace damaged aprons on 2 remote guzzlers in the Central Region and fly in a new Boss tank, apron and fencing on the Levan WMA
Location:
Timpanogos #3 guzzler on the Timpanogos WMA Deadman Hollow guzzler between Spring Creek Canyon and Hobble Creek Canyon Levan WMA new guzzler site, remote site on east side of the WMA
Project Need
Need For Project:
The Central Region has over 250 guzzlers of various types. This project is replacing damaged apron materials on two remote guzzler sites and flying in a new Boss tank and apron on the Levan WMA. These water systems help supply reliable water to various wildlife in these areas.
Objectives:
* Fly in new apron materials to Deadman Hollow guzzler and Timpanogos #3 guzzler. * Fly in a new Boss tank and apron on the Levan WMA * Install new tank and aprons with Dedicated Hunters and Regional personnel * Fly out old apron material
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?):
The damaged guzzler aprons are not currently functioning and need to be removed. New aprons need to be installed to maximize water collection in guzzler tanks. The Levan WMA guzzler tank and apron materials have been purchased as part of project 7538 North Sanpitch Mule Deer Habitat Improvement Project but the location to install the guzzler is not accessible with a truck and trailer and will need to be flown in.
Relation To Management Plan:
This project will help meet some of the objectives and strategies of the deer and elk management plans for the Wasatch Mountains and Nebo Wildlife Management Areas. Wasatch Mountains Deer Plan Cooperate with partners to maintain, improve and expand availability of water for deer in arid/limiting area on the unit using guzzlers, improved springs, and/or other water systems. Unit 16, Nebo Continue to improve, protect, and restore sagebrush steppe habitats critical to deer. Cooperate with federal land management agencies and private landowners in carrying out habitat improvements such as pinion juniper removal, reseedings, controlled burns, grazing management, water developments etc. on public and private lands. Habitat improvement projects will occur on both winter ranges as well as summer range. This project will help meet goals and objectives of the Timpanogos WMA HMP and the Juab Valley WMAs HMP * Maintain guzzlers and other water sources
Fire / Fuels:
Not applicable
Water Quality/Quantity:
This project will improve water quantity
Compliance:
No ground disturbance on apron replacements
Methods:
* Fly in apron materials by helicopter * Fly out old damaged apron material * Fly in Boss tank and apron to the Levan WMA * Install new tank and aprons with Regional personnel and Dedicated Hunters * Monitor guzzler use with trail cameras
Monitoring:
Central Region personnel will install trail cameras at all 3 guzzler sites to monitor wildlife use for 2 years.
Partners:
This project will be done with Division of Wildlife Habitat personnel and volunteers
Future Management:
Two of the guzzlers are on DWR lands that will be managed according the the existing Habitat Management Plans. The Deadman Hollow guzzler is on Forest Service land and will be maintained by the Division.
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources:
This project will provide reliable water and improve the distribution of deer and elk and other wildlife.
