Final Methods
Before chainsaw work began a seed mix was flown on Dry Wash units 4, 5, and 9. After the seed was flown a contract forestry chainsaw crew completed lop and scatter work in Pinyon/Juniper on a total of 115 acres within the three units. The acres cut in each unit is as follows: Unit 4 = 35 acres, Unit 5 = 50 acres, and Unit 9 = 30 acres. The contractor began chainsaw work on 10/30/2019 and completed work on 11/08/19. Unit 4 was cut first to contract standards in a satisfactory manner. Unit 5 was cut second and did not meet contract standards due to leaving to many Pinyon/Juniper trees within the unit and refusing to cut them. Unit 9 was cut third to contract standards in a satisfactory manner. The contractor did not receive full payment because of the trees left behind in unit 5 and a partial payment plan was worked out. The lessons learned are to inspect contract work daily if necessary to include the weekends in order to provide feedback and corrections as needed. The majority of unit 5 was cut on the weekend while the inspector was off.

Project Narrative
The Dry Wash project area is in the southeastern portion of the Ferron-Price Ranger District on the Manti-La Sal National Forest. It is located in Emery County approximately 5 miles west of the city of Ferron. The Dry Wash Project is designed to reduce Pinyon/Juniper density in sagebrush and shrub land openings. Multiple units in the project have been treated using mastication by the USFS. Due to limited access for equipment, units 4,5, and 9 were treated using a lop and scatter hand thin contract. These units comprise 264 acres of Pinyon/Juniper. The contract will be through the good neighbor agreement and will be awarded through the State of Utah. Seed was flown on prior to hand treatment in conjunction with the state. Prescription will be to remove all pinyon/juniper over approximately 40% of each unit.

Future Management
Prior to implementation photo points were established at representative sites within the proposed units. At a minimum photo points will be revisited at 5 and 10 years post treatment, per the NEPA. The photo points will help gauge the success of the seed establishing within the units. Additional maintenance may be required in future years as juniper has a tendency to re-sprout once treated. Monitoring will be completed by the USFS and the units retreated as needed. Future units will be completed within the Dry Wash project area to include mastication and chainsaw work.
