Final Methods
We built 35 PAL-style BDAs that have a gap left in the middle to prevent water impoundment in the upper reaches of New Canyon Creek in the spring of 2022. See Images. We planted approximately 4,000 sagebrush seedlings in November of 2022 at the Black Hills wildlife management area. We utilized USFS and FFSL employees to burn approximately 412 acres of hand piles in Willow drainage created in earlier phases. We utilized USFS equipment crew to masticate 161 acres in Willow drainage as well as RX prep along the New Canyon road. We utilized UDWR contract to cut/pile an additional 85 acres in New Canyon that were unfunded in previous phases. We utilized UDWR contract to cut activity slash lines through approximately 528 acres of mixed conifer for RX. We utilized USFS crews to treat approximately 400 acres of noxious weeds in the Willow drainage.

Project Narrative
By returning the late seral conifer stands to early seral aspen on the North Zone of the Manti La Sal national forest, we were able to reduce the threat of wildfire, insects, disease and drought to the watershed as well as increase the forage and water production with the treated areas. This improves big game summer range habitat while also reducing the risk of a catastrophic wildfire and associated risk to firefighters, the public, and infrastructure in the Ephraim/New Canyon drainages..

Future Management
We will continue to treat all 5,700 acres through mechanical treatments, commercial harvesting, and prescribe burning. Also, we will continue to monitor and treat noxious weeds/invasive species through USFS personnel and funds on federal property. Phase 4 will include additional burning of 300 acres of piles along with up to 1500 acres of broadcast RX for aspen regeneration.
