Need for Project
The town of Mendon winters a significant population of turkeys within the residential parts of town. This causes depredation issues for the residents and also the wildlife staff of the DWR. This project will provide an area for the turkeys to loaf and forage above the town. Phase four has continued to receive a lot of support from the residents. The town of Mendon has banned feeding the turkeys which helps with this projects success. Though the winter of 18/19 has seen some feeding occur but an effort to stop that along with DWR trapping efforts and the city providing an additional field for grain planting there should be a reduction in the amount of turkeys in town going forward.
Provide evidence about the nature of the problem and the need to address it. Identify the significance of the problem using a variety of data sources. For example, if a habitat restoration project is being proposed to benefit greater sage-grouse, describe the existing plant community characteristics that limit habitat value for greater sage-grouse and identify the changes needed for habitat improvement.
*
Objectives
To provide a winter food source for turkeys above the town of Mendon that will hold the turkeys out of town. Improve relations between the UDWR and residents of these towns thus gaining permission in the future to expand these plantings into private fields and holding even more turkeys out of town. Reduce the amount of calls that DWR depredation staff have to field for turkey related incidents. Through these cooperative relationships provide more areas for hunters to remove birds.
Provide an overall goal for the project and then provide clear, specific and measurable objectives (outcomes) to be accomplished by the proposed actions. If possible, tie to one or more of the public benefits UWRI is providing.
*
Project Location/Timing Justification (Why Here? Why Now?)
If this project in not completed there is a risk that the tolerance for the turkeys will go away and the DWR will be required to remove all turkeys from the area.
LOCATION: Justify the proposed location of this project over other areas, include publicly scrutinized planning/recovery documents that list this area as a priority, remote sensing modeling that show this area is a good candidate for restoration, wildlife migration information and other data that help justify this project's location.
TIMING: Justify why this project should be implemented at this time. For example, Is the project area at risk of crossing an ecological or other threshold wherein future restoration would become more difficult, cost prohibitive, or even impossible.

Relation to Management Plans
Utah Wild Turkey Management Plan 2014 Goal A. Maintain and Improve Wild Turkey Populations to Habitat or Social Carrying Capacity Objective 2. Increase wild turkey habitat, quality and quantity, by 40,000 acres statewide by 2020. Strategy d: Conduct habitat improvement projects in limiting habitat(s). Goal B. Minimize Human-Wild Turkey Conflicts State of Utah Resource Management Plan pg 236 Expand wildlife populations and improve wildlife habitat Avoid, minimize damages to private lands Minimize negative impacts from wildlife
List management plans where this project will address an objective or strategy in the plan. Describe how the project area overlaps the objective or strategy in the plan and the relevance of the project to the successful implementation of those plans. It is best to provide this information in a list format with the description immediately following the plan objective or strategy.
*
Fire/Fuels
None
If applicable, detail how the proposed project will significantly reduce the risk of fuel loading and/or continuity of hazardous fuels including the use of fire-wise species in re-seeding operations. Describe the value of any features being protected by reducing the risk of fire. Values may include; communities at risk, permanent infrastructure, municipal watersheds, campgrounds, critical wildlife habitat, etc. Include the size of the area where fuels are being reduced and the distance from the feature(s) at risk.
*
Water Quality/Quantity
None
Describe how the project has the potential to improve water quality and/or increase water quantity, both over the short and long term. Address run-off, erosion, soil infiltration, and flooding, if applicable.
*
Compliance
The areas where plantings occur have been previously disturbed by farming activities and previous phases of this project. NEPA is not required.
Description of efforts, both completed and planned, to bring the proposed action into compliance with any and all cultural resource, NEPA, ESA, etc. requirements. If compliance is not required enter "not applicable" and explain why not it is not required.
*
Methods
The same fields will be planted again along with two additional fields that are at the south of town. It has been observed that turkeys move into town down that stream coridor and hopefully providing food and cover for them will reduce how many come into town.
Describe the actions, activities, tasks to be implemented as part of the proposed project; how these activities will be carried out, equipment to be used, when, and by whom.
*
Monitoring
The Mendon city council will report on turkeys numbers in town along with the UDWR area biologist and depredation specialist. The success of the potted plants and trees will be monitored by the DWR and watered if needed.
Describe plans to monitor for project success and achievement of stated objectives. Include details on type of monitoring (vegetation, wildlife, etc.), schedule, assignments and how the results of these monitoring efforts will be reported and/or uploaded to this project page. If needed, upload detailed plans in the "attachments" section.
*
Partners
NWTF will be invited to help with planting. Local landowner D. Larson will plant the grains. Dedicated hunters help with watering and planting as well.
List any and all partners (agencies, organizations, NGO's, private landowners) that support the proposal and/or have been contacted and included in the planning and design of the proposed project. Describe efforts to gather input and include these agencies, landowners, permitees, sportsman groups, researchers, etc. that may be interested/affected by the proposed project. Partners do not have to provide funding or in-kind services to a project to be listed.
*
Future Management
These plants will be monitored and watered as needed by residents of Mendon/ Dedicated hunters. In the winter of 2016/2017 turkeys have been observed in the grain fields. IN 17/18 there is sign of turkeys foraging in the fields. In 18/19 there have been turkeys observed in the planted fields. There are still turkeys in the town of Mendon but seem to be less and working with the city and law enforcement to prevent feeding of turkeys in town and and to haze remaining birds out of town if needed.
Detail future methods or techniques (including administrative actions) that will be implemented to help in accomplishing the stated objectives and to insure the long term success/stability of the proposed project. This may include: post-treatment grazing rest and/or management plans/changes, wildlife herd/species management plan changes, ranch plans, conservation easements or other permanent protection plans, resource management plans, forest plans, etc.
*
Sustainable Uses of Natural Resources
None
Potential for the proposed action to improve quality or quantity of sustainable uses such as grazing, timber harvest, biomass utilization, recreation, etc. Grazing improvements may include actions to improve forage availability and/or distribution of livestock.
