Final Methods
The Nature Conservancy hired a contractor to excavate approximately 600ft of the linear backwater channel and pour the concrete foundation for the water control structure that will convey floor waters from the Colorado river into the central pond at the Matheson wetland WMA. On 9/9/2019 to 9/11/2019 the gates and screens were installed into the concrete structure. The water control and area that was dredged are operational.

Project Narrative
This project will provide backwater refuge for wild spawned razorback suckers which are listed under the ESA. The water control structure will allow for the entrainment of larval fish in the ponds to grow through the summer and be released into the Colorado river in the fall. We will continue to seek funding to finish dredging the backwater channel and the central pond to provide sufficient holding capacity for the wild spawned fish that will be en-trained in the project area. We will also be piping a fresh water source (TNC owned water rights) to the central pond to provide additional water during the summer months.

Future Management
Fish will be tagged as they are released into the Colorado river in the fall to be monitored as mark recapture. Sediment maintenance will be needed near the gate and screen, those effort will be competed by DWR and TNC staff.
